Your boiler and radiators are making noises

Boilers and radiators make noises from time to time and this is completely normal. But if the noises change and get louder then it’s worth taking notice. Here are some of the possible noises explained:

Tapping: This could be a sign of sludge build up in your central heating system. It can be easily remedied with a powerflush.

Whistling: This can be caused by limescale build up or trapped air within the system.

Gurgling: This may be caused by air in the system, a blockage in the pipework or a frozen or blocked condensate pipe. Or possibly a broken pump.

You should let an engineer know if you’ve noticed any new, loud noises coming from your central heating system.

The blue flame in your boiler is burning yellow

The flame in your boiler should always be a sharp blue flame. If it’s changed to yellow or looks floppy then you should turn your boiler off and call a Gas Safe engineer straightaway and explain your situation.

Leaking boiler

Your boiler should never leak water. If it does, something may have broken inside, such as a seal or valve. You shouldn’t ignore a leak as it could lead to more serious problems. It’s recommended you turn off your boiler and have it checked by a professional heating engineer.

Bad smells when your boiler is on

When you smell a sulphurous odour like eggs when you use your boiler you may have a gas leak. You should turn off your boiler and call the emergency Gas Line on 0800 111 999. They’ll recommend to get in touch with a registered Gas Safe engineer to take a look at your boiler.

Replacement parts are expensive

If your boiler is old or the manufacturer is no longer in business it may be tricky for your engineer to get hold of the parts needed to fix your boiler, and could make the fix more expensive. It might be more economical to replace the boiler than make numerous fixes. However if your boiler is hugely reliable and has only let you down the once and is in good condition at annual servicing, it’s probably worth repairing the problem. You’ll be able to discuss this with your engineer.
